Dear Reader,

I am looking forward to having the experience of my own classroom and being a part of a school community.   I believe that every child is unique and every faculty member has something different to offer.   It truly is a rewarding experience to be able to work with both young children and collaborate with my colleagues.

My educational background from Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY includes a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Early Childhood Education and also a Master’s Degree in Special and Elementary Education.  I am certified to teach general and special education, birth through grade 6, in New York.

As a graduate student, I student taught at Jefferson Elementary School in New Rochelle, NY for an entire semester, January 2010- May 2010.  I spent seven weeks in a self-contained fourth-fifth grade special education classroom and another seven weeks in a first grade classroom.  This experience has taught me that every child has their own needs and way of learning.  I learned different classroom management techniques, like making sure that every student is engaged in a task and knows what to do when that task is completed because not every student finishes work at the same time and that positive reinforcement helps to decrease unwanted behaviors.  I have also learned the importance of using the resources available in the school, from the specialists in the building, the colleagues, and other school personnel.

I hope to continue my education in the future by seeking out and taking advantage of professional development opportunities as well as getting certified as a literacy specialist.  I know that my beliefs and ideas will change as my experience in the classroom grows.  I am looking forward to learning about myself and my students.

Attached are my beliefs about education and classroom management, lessons I have implemented in the classroom, and other aspects I feel are important about myself and teaching.  I look forward to an opportunity for an interview and any questions you might have.

Sincerely,

Dana Solano
